Ngatea’s Garage Sale
‘New Zealand’s biggest Garage sale’ it was promoted as,
way back in 1996... and so it began.
Thousands of 'out-of-towners' flocked to Ngatea to find
a bargain. The skepticism that surrounded the idea of Ngatea's
Garage Sale quickly
disappeared as the day became an annual event.
Ngatea's Garage Sale is always held on the Saturday before the long Labour weekend.
The original idea came from a relative newcomer to
town, Dr Sharon Sjeie, bringing to New Zealand what she had seen in a
small country town overseas.
Sharon has long gone from Ngatea, but her idea
continues. It’s an ideal opportunity for a small town’s residents to hold
a Garage Sale and have the response that would well exceed what you would
find in a major town or City.
With all residents holding a ‘Garage Sale’ on the one
day it makes sense to be able to either walk or ride around the streets
that make up the township and view what’s on sale without a lot of
traveling.
It has also given an opportunity to the many community
groups and Market vendors to set up stalls and tents on the day to cater
for the thousands that travel from far and wide to see what’s on offer.
One mans Junk is another’s Treasure.
Opportunities for groups/vendors from out of town to
set up stalls on allocated spots are available at the College, Primary
School and Hotel. Bookings for space need to be made direct with the
venues.
